Civil War 1862 Train Explosion Engraving

The details

This Civil War‑era issue of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper features a dramatic engraving of a train explosion in Virginia alongside other wartime scenes, including ironclad naval warfare and battle imagery. These original newspaper leaves were printed during the war and served as some of the only visual records of the conflict before photography became widespread. Each piece is a true 1860s publication printed during the war, not a later reproduction. The presence of print on the reverse side (verso) confirms these are original newspaper leaves, exactly as issued, with no modern reprints or facsimiles. These were the primary visual records of the war before photography became widespread, making them historically significant as well as visually striking. The subject matter here is a high‑demand collector scene—Civil War battle imagery, naval ironclads, and large‑format page engravings. These are among the most desirable themes in Frank Leslie’s publications and consistently outperform generic or non‑war issues. This set has strong display appeal. The bold contrast and large‑scale engravings draw the eye, and the paper has aged to a mellow off‑white tone with gentle wear. Expect typical age‑related toning, edge wear, and occasional minor tears but no major damage or repairs. A special piece for Civil War collectors, historians, or décor with historical impact.
