The details
Authentic early 1900s ESSANAY soda acid fire extinguisher — complete with original internal glass bottle, protective copper/brass bottle cage, plunger assembly, discharge rod, and mounting hardware. A complete example professionally conserved to preserve its original character. The ESSANAY soda-acid design was one of the dominant firefighting technologies of the early 20th century: pulling the ring and inverting the canister caused an acid vial inside to break and mix with bicarbonate solution, generating the pressurized carbon dioxide that expelled the extinguishing agent. This example retains the full assembly that made the mechanism work. Constructed of copper body with brass top, plunger, and a fully legible brass instruction plaque. Conservation approach: Recessed lettering on the instruction plaque has been carefully re-darkened for readability. Cleaning was intentionally restrained to preserve age, factory character, and honest wear. The surface has been protected with Renaissance Wax for long-term preservation without altering tone or texture. No lamp conversion. No decorative repurpose. No heavy over-polishing. Displays exceptionally well in industrial, loft, firehouse, library, or curated antique interiors. A strong piece for collectors of early safety equipment, firefighting history, copper and brass industrial objects, and American manufacturing.
