Original 1956 Lance 7-Selection floor vending machine, fully mechanical and fully operational with original keys. Built during the height of America’s post-war retail expansion, this commercial store vendor was manufactured by Lance in Charlotte, North Carolina, when small-town groceries, hardware stores, bus depots, and textile mills relied on countertop and floor vendors for impulse snack sales. Lance began as a regional cracker bakery in 1913 and expanded rapidly after World War II, placing thousands of mechanical vending cabinets throughout the Southeast. By the mid-1950s, the company had refined these heavy-gauge steel gravity-feed machines into durable, low-maintenance retail equipment — no electricity required, no refrigeration, no wiring — just precision mechanical linkage designed to work day after day. This example retains its original red enamel cabinet, blue interior slogan panel reading “Don’t Go ’Round Hungry!”, complete 7-selection pull-handle configuration, and intact gravity tray system. All seven handles actuate properly, the coin mechanism cycles as designed, and the internal linkage remains complete and unaltered. The flat floor-standing base was intended to sit directly on tile or concrete near checkout counters for maximum visibility and turnover. Honest lower-edge wear reflects real commercial service rather than restoration. The serial plate remains intact, placing production in the mid-1950s expansion period when Lance was aggressively installing branded vendors across Southern grocery chains. Unlike later illuminated models, this is a fully mechanical unit from the era before lighting and modernized coin systems became common. That simplicity is part of its appeal — industrial American steel construction, straightforward engineering, and authentic mid-century retail presence. It presents as a statement piece suitable for restaurants, breweries, diners, collectors, or period commercial interiors where originality matters more than over-restoration.
