The details
Original vintage Starland Dairies one-quart milk bottle from Savannah, Georgia, made from heavy glass with an unusual smoky clear brown-gray tint. The bottle features burgundy applied-color label graphics on two opposing sides and has the classic square returnable dairy-bottle form with rounded corners, sloping shoulders and a heavy reinforced mouth. The front displays the Starland Dairies script logo between two stars, followed by: “Grade A Dairy Products.” The reverse carries the especially desirable pictorial advertising slogan: “They Come to Visit, Not to Stay — Return Our Bottles Every Day.” Below the wording is a whimsical illustration of two walking milk bottles accompanied by a smaller baby bottle. This reverse graphic gives the bottle considerably more display appeal than a standard dairy bottle carrying only plain lettering. Starland Dairies operated from its historic plant at 2425 Bull Street in Savannah. The dairy opened during the 1930s and supplied milk and dairy products to Savannah-area residents for decades. The surrounding neighborhood later became known as Savannah’s Starland District, giving surviving Starland advertising added interest to collectors of local history, Georgia memorabilia and Southern commercial advertising. This bottle is believed to date from the late 1940s through the 1950s, although the exact manufacturing year and glassmaker have not been confirmed from the currently visible base markings. Comparable Starland bottles were produced in Duraglas with Dacro-style dairy finishes, but this example should not be attributed to a specific manufacturer without a clearly readable photograph of the base. The smoky brown-gray cast of the glass is particularly attractive when displayed near natural light. Combined with the burgundy two-sided graphics and illustrated return-bottle slogan, it makes a strong decorative and historical piece for a vintage milk-bottle collection, Savannah display, Southern mercantile collection, farmhouse kitchen, dairy advertising collection or local Georgia history exhibit. Condition: Vintage used condition with expected age-related surface wear, haze, scratches and possible case marks from commercial handling. The burgundy applied-color graphics remain readable and display well. No cap is included. Please review all photographs carefully for the exact condition of the glass, mouth, corners, base and applied-color lettering. The white material shown inside the bottle was used only to provide contrast for photography and is not included. A distinctive piece of authentic Starland Dairies and Savannah history, with excellent regional character and an unusually appealing two-sided advertising design.
