The details

Exceptional antique Double Safety pint Mason fruit jar by Smalley, Kivlan & Onthank of Boston, Massachusetts, complete with its original-style glass lid and old-style Lightning wire-bail closure. This is an outstanding high-grade example of an early American antique canning jar, positively identified as Red Book #817. Dating to the early 1900s, this clear glass fruit jar combines several features sought by serious antique Mason jar and fruit jar collectors: the large flowing “Double Safety” script across the body, prominent “TIGHT” embossing around the neck, manufacturer identification on the base, and the complete Lightning-style closure assembly. The base is boldly embossed: SMALLEY, KIVLAN & ONTHANK BOSTON MASS. The glass lid is additionally mold-marked 512. RED BOOK IDENTIFICATION This jar matches Red Book 14, #817 – DOUBLE SAFETY. The Red Book entry identifies #817 by the same combination found on this example: Smalley, Kivlan & Onthank, Boston, Mass. base; smooth lip; old-style Lightning seal; and TIGHT embossed on the neck. This example is the clear pint size. That positive identification is particularly useful for collectors searching for an accurately attributed antique fruit jar rather than an unidentified vintage canning jar. CONDITION & DISPLAY QUALITY This is an exceptionally clean, high-grade example with brilliant clear glass and unusually strong visual presentation. The Double Safety script displays beautifully, while the large TIGHT neck embossing is crisp and immediately visible. The jar retains its glass lid and wire closure hardware, giving it the complete period appearance collectors want. The metal hardware retains natural age and oxidation appropriate to an antique piece and has not been artificially refinished. The glass itself is remarkably clean for its age. Please examine the detailed photographs closely, as they show the actual jar being offered, including the rim, mouth, lid, closure, embossing, base and manufacturer markings. Its appeal lies not merely in age, but in the combination of identifiable maker, unusual Double Safety branding, distinctive TIGHT neck, complete closure and unusually clean condition.
