Antique Ball Triple-L Half Gallon Light Green Mason Jar BALL Only No MASON Seed Bubbles Zinc Lid 1896-1910 This is an authentic antique Ball Triple-L half-gallon fruit jar in an attractive light-green glass color, dating to approximately 1896–1910. The front carries Ball’s early 3-L Loop, commonly called Triple-L, script logo. Unlike many later Ball jars, this example is embossed only with the Ball signature and has no MASON lettering beneath it. This BALL-only face is an important identifying feature of the early design and gives the jar a clean, unmistakably turn-of-the-century appearance. Based on its script, capacity, color and closure style, this jar is consistent with Red Book No. 193: BALL, script 3-L Loop. The Red Book dates this family of jars to circa 1896–1910 and separately recognizes light-green examples from the ordinary aqua versions. Glass Color and Character The glass is best described as light green, not standard aqua blue. Its color changes somewhat with lighting and background, appearing softer indoors and considerably greener when illuminated by natural light. The thick antique glass contains numerous genuine manufacturing characteristics, including: • Pronounced seed bubbles • Larger trapped air bubbles • Visible glass movement and waviness • Uneven color concentration • Natural mold irregularities • Stronger green color around portions of the heel and base These features were created during manufacture and are part of the jar’s authentic early glass character. They should not be mistaken for modern damage. Embossing The front is embossed with the early Ball Triple-L script alone. There is no MASON embossing beneath the Ball logo. This distinguishes it from other Triple-L half-gallon jars carrying block MASON lettering and makes it a clearly different variation for an established Ball or fruit-jar collection. The script remains visible and presents especially well when the jar is displayed against a contrasting background or illuminated by natural light. Closure The jar is fitted with an aged zinc screw lid showing an honest darkened surface, oxidation, discoloration and patina consistent with age. Because antique fruit-jar lids were removable and commonly interchanged during decades of household use, the zinc lid is described as a period-compatible closure rather than guaranteed as the lid originally issued with this exact jar body. The lid has not been polished or refinished, preserving the aged appearance preferred by many collectors. Collector Interest This jar combines several desirable characteristics: • Early Ball Triple-L or 3-L Loop script • BALL-only front without MASON embossing • Large half-gallon capacity • Light-green glass rather than ordinary pale aqua • Heavy seed bubbles and pronounced glass movement • Period zinc screw closure • Turn-of-the-century American manufacture • Strong decorative and collector display presence The large half-gallon form gives the jar considerably more visual presence than a standard quart example. Its light-green color and bubble-filled glass become especially attractive when displayed near a window, under cabinet lighting or against dark wood. This would make an excellent addition to: • An advanced Ball jar collection • An antique fruit-jar collection • A collection of early American utility glass • A primitive kitchen or pantry display • A Southern mercantile or country-store interior • A farmhouse, traditional or historic home • A collection focused on early glass color and manufacturing variations Condition This is a genuine antique utility jar showing expected evidence of age, manufacture, storage and past use. The glass displays seed bubbles, waviness, mold irregularities, light surface wear and other natural period characteristics. The zinc lid shows oxidation, darkening, surface wear and aged patina. Please examine every photograph carefully, particularly the mouth, threads, shoulder, embossing, body, heel, base and zinc lid. The photographs form an important part of the condition description and show the exact jar the buyer will receive. This jar is offered as an antique collectible and decorative display piece. It is not represented as suitable for modern food preservation, pressure canning or active sealing use.
