The details
Antique Mission Trade Mark half-gallon fruit jar in desirable aqua glass, manufactured in California by the W. J. Latchford Co. of Los Angeles. This is the correct collector identification for the jar and corresponds to Red Book No. 2190. The front is boldly embossed MISSION above the distinctive pictorial bell trademark, with TRADE MARK positioned beside the bell and MADE IN CALIFORNIA below. The base carries the important regional manufacturer embossing: M’F’D BY W. J. LATCHFORD CO. LOS ANGELES, CALIF. This half-gallon variation has the smooth-lip Mason beaded-neck seal described in the Red Book and is fitted with a zinc screw cap and milk-glass liner. The large size, strong shoulder, aqua coloration, bell emblem and clearly marked California base give the jar considerably more display presence than an ordinary unmarked canning jar. The glass exhibits authentic early manufacturing character, including scattered seed bubbles, subtle waviness and natural variations in the aqua tone. These features are part of the jar’s original production and are especially attractive when displayed near natural light. The zinc lid retains an aged surface patina consistent with use and storage. California-made fruit jars occupy a distinctive place in American fruit jar collecting. This example appeals not only to advanced Mason jar and antique bottle collectors, but also to collectors of Los Angeles history, California advertising, pictorial embossed glass, early kitchenware and regional Western Americana. The prominent bell design also makes it an excellent standalone display piece for an antique cabinet, country-store interior, farmhouse kitchen, pantry shelf or historic glass collection. This listing is for the exact jar, zinc cap and liner shown in the photographs. Please examine every image carefully for the condition of the glass, rim, neck, base, embossing and closure. Natural bubbles, mold lines, glass irregularities and wear to the metal cap are expected characteristics of an authentic antique fruit jar and are not modern damage or reproduction features. The jar will be carefully wrapped, fully cushioned and shipped insured, with additional protection around the rim, shoulder and base.
