Original 1863 Bank of the State of South Carolina 15¢ note from the Confederate era — authentic Civil War fractional currency, not a reproduction.
This genuine Fifteen Cents (15¢) note was issued February 1, 1863, by the Bank of the State of South Carolina. During the Civil War, coin shortages forced Southern banks to print small-denomination “shinplasters” like this to keep commerce moving. The note features the South Carolina state seal with a palmetto tree and liberty motif, printed in blue and black with red text on the reverse reading “Fifteen – Issued under Act Feb., 1863.”
The paper remains crisp and well-preserved with light folds, a clean signature, and strong ink throughout. A fine piece of Confederate-era paper money that reflects both state pride and wartime necessity. Excellent addition for collectors of Civil War history, Confederate currency, or obsolete Southern banknotes.
Approx. size: 3¾” x 2⅞”
Date: February 1, 1863
Issuer: Bank of the State of South Carolina
