Antique 5-gallon Blue Star stoneware crock jug with a hand-applied five-point cobalt blue star — a bold decorative element on a working-class American piece of serious size and presence.
Five-gallon stoneware crocks represent the upper range of standard household production — large enough to ferment a full batch of sauerkraut or store rendered lard through winter. The five-point star mark on this jug is a decorative flourish not associated with a single named pottery, which was common practice among regional American stoneware makers of the late 1800s and early 1900s who used symbols rather than text as capacity markers or decorative identifiers. The star is brush-applied in cobalt blue slip, with the characteristic feathering and hand-pressure variation that confirms hand decoration rather than stencil application. The crock presents well — good structural integrity, no cracks, a stable flat base, and natural age to the salt glaze.
Dimensions: approximately 15" tall. Condition: structurally sound, age-appropriate wear to glaze surface.
