Vintage 1974 Studio Pottery Motto Jug – Signed Orzel – “If I Could Only Remember My Name”
Offered here is a large, hand-thrown studio pottery jug created in 1974, signed on the base Orzel ’74. Around the shoulder is an incised motto band reading:
“IF I COULD ONLY REMEMBER MY NAME”
This witty phrase references David Crosby’s 1971 solo album, a perfect example of how 1970s studio potters combined traditional harvest jug folk forms with countercultural influences.
Features:
• Hand-thrown stoneware with alkaline/ash glaze
• Gray body with green glaze drips around rim
• Pulled handle, wide body, traditional harvest jug shape
• Deeply inscribed motto encircling the shoulder
• Signed and dated: Orzel ’74
• Size: approx. 11–12 inches tall
Condition:
Very good vintage condition. No cracks, chips, or repairs. Minor glaze variations and small kiln marks typical of handmade studio pottery. Displays beautifully.
Why Collect:
This jug bridges 19th-century motto pottery tradition with the 1970s studio pottery movement. The dated signature, size, and cultural reference make it a standout display piece for collectors of folk art pottery, mid-century ceramics, or music-era crossover items.
Shipping:
Your jug will be carefully packed, double-boxed, and shipped with full insurance.
